# 5 Things You Should Tell Your Insurance Agent Before Your Next Renewal

Posted on [October 02, 2026](https://blog.mullinginsurance.com/5-things-you-should-tell-your-insurance-agent-before-your-next-renewal)

Insurance renewal probably isn’t the most exciting date on your business calendar. For many business owners, it’s tempting to review the new premium, sign the paperwork, and get back to work.

But a lot can change in a business over the course of a year.

Maybe you hired more employees. Added a few vehicles. Bought new equipment. Expanded your services. Or had a really great year and saw your revenue grow.

Those changes may seem like normal parts of running a business, but they can also affect your insurance needs. Your renewal is a good opportunity to make sure your coverage still reflects the business you’re running today, not the one you were running a year ago.

Before your next renewal, here are five things worth mentioning to your insurance agent.

### 1. You Hired Employees or Your Payroll Changed

Did your team grow this year? Did you add a new type of position or significantly increase your payroll?

Tell your agent.

Changes to your workforce can affect several areas of your insurance, particularly workers’ compensation. The type of work your employees perform matters, too. Hiring another office employee isn't necessarily the same from an insurance perspective as hiring someone who works on a construction site, operates machinery, or spends most of the day behind the wheel.

Even if hiring new employees feels like business as usual, keeping your agent updated helps make sure your policy information accurately reflects your current operation.

### 2. You Bought Vehicles, Equipment, or Other Major Assets

That new work truck might be hard to forget, but what about the equipment you purchased six months ago?

Businesses regularly invest in tools, machinery, computers, inventory, furniture, trailers, and other equipment throughout the year. Over time, those purchases can add up.

If you've made significant investments since your last renewal, let your insurance agent know. The value of your business property today may look very different from what was originally listed in your policy.

The same goes for vehicles. If you've added, replaced, or changed how company vehicles are being used, those updates should be part of the renewal conversation.

### 3. You Added a Location, Renovated Your Space, or Started Working Somewhere New

Business growth sometimes comes with a change of scenery.

Maybe you opened a second location, expanded your current building, added warehouse space, moved offices, or started storing equipment somewhere new.

Even renovations can be worth mentioning. A major buildout, new equipment, or other improvements could change the value of the property you're trying to protect.

Don't assume your existing policy automatically accounts for every change. Give your agent the updated details so they can review how your coverage applies.

### 4. Your Services or Operations Have Changed

This is an easy one to overlook.

Businesses evolve. A contractor might start taking on larger commercial projects. A company that previously sold products in person might add e-commerce. You might introduce a new service, begin working with subcontractors, expand into another area, or take on a completely different type of customer.

From your perspective, it might just feel like growth. From an insurance perspective, you're potentially introducing exposures that weren't part of the business when your policy was originally written.

A simple question to ask yourself before renewal is:

***Are we doing anything today that we weren't doing this time last year?***

If the answer is yes, bring it up.

### 5. Your Revenue Has Grown

Having a great year is something worth celebrating, but it's also something your insurance agent should know about.

Some commercial insurance policies use sales or revenue when determining exposure and premium. If your business has grown significantly since your last renewal, outdated estimates may no longer accurately represent your operation.

And revenue isn't the only number worth reviewing. Depending on your business and policies, your agent may want updated payroll, property values, inventory, vehicle information, subcontractor costs, or other details.

Providing accurate numbers upfront can also help reduce surprises if a policy is later audited.

#### Don't Treat Renewal Like an Automatic Refill

Your business isn't standing still, so your insurance shouldn't be treated like something you simply renew and forget about.

Think of your renewal as an annual business check-in. What changed? What grew? What did you buy? What are you doing differently? And does your current insurance program still make sense for where the business is today?

At Mulling Insurance, we want to understand how your business is changing so we can help you review your coverage with the full picture in mind.
